Andrew Hyslop was born on 25 November 1903 in Maitland East, New South Wales, one of ten children. In February 1920, he commenced teacher training at Sydney Teachers' College in Glebe, Sydney. He went on to teach at nine different public schools across regional New South Wales within the first eight years of his career. On 11 January 1930, he married Beatrice Mary Hall (1904-1999), with whom he had three children. In 1940, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, joining the 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion on 22 November under its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Fredrick 'Black Jack' Galleghan. Hyslop served in the 27th Brigade in Malaya, which surrendered at Tyersall Palace in Singapore on 27 February 1942, resulting in Hyslop and his comrades being captured as prisoners of war of the Changi internee camps. From April to December 1943, he was moved into the F Force to work on the Thailand-Burma Railway, and then returned to Changi and interred in Changi Gaol from June 1944. Changi was liberated on 5 September 1945 and Hyslop arrived home in Sydney on 9 October 1945. He returned to teaching within three months, working in various inner city schools and, by 1949, had become principal at Redfern Central School (later Redfern Public School). He was also prominent in the NSW Teachers' Federation, holding an Executive position. He retired from teaching on 27 January 1965 and his former identity as a member of the military services re-dominated his identity, culminating in a commemorative trip to Malaysia and Singapore in 1979. He died on 31 January 1982 in Umina, New South Wales.

4 notebooks relating to Andrew Hyslop's time in Malaya and Singapore during World War 2 and as a prisoner-of-war in Changi. "Notes" notebook includes a daily diary from November 1940 to June 1954 with military movements, dates and casualties; information about camp; recipes; local culture; reading list. "Scribbler" notebook, dated December 1944, includes sketches of Changi during Hyslop's incarceration from 16 October 1944. Brown leather notebook includes notes on learning Japanese and Malay languages. Cream notebook includes military movements; financial information; poetry and reflections.

Sketches; poems, songs and handwritten sheet music; recipes; military ephemera; correspondence relating to photographic copies of sketches. Dated 1940 to 1979

29 photographic prints of Andrew Hyslop in Malaysia, and portraits with his wife and children. Many prints are captioned with descriptions and dates.

Handwritten manuscript on the history of maritime military history of Britain and wider Europe and key British figures such as Horatio Nelson, Lord Byron, Charles Lamb and John Keats

Documents including teacher training and annual examination results; memorandums; teacher inspections; correspondence with the Department of Education regarding Andrew Hyslop's teaching career in Newtown, Redfern Central School, Kingsgrove Infants School and others. minutes from address on Education for World Personality given to the Rotary Club of Marrickville. Dated 10 February 1921 to November 1963

12 photographic prints relating to education. 6 prints of various classes, probably taught by Hyslop, at Bellbird 1921; Blackfriars 1936; Lake Wyangan 1936; Lavington 1938. 5 prints of a school building including interiors of the Principal's office. 1 postcard to Andrew Hyslop from Barbara McMullan[?] about teaching at the "Iore[?] Station School for natives" possibly written from Iore, Papua New Guinea.
