  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Archibald Nimmo Brownlee (1882-1965) and his wife, Elizabeth (Eliza) Hamilton Brownlee (1881-1953) emigrated from Scotland on the Moravian, arriving in Sydney on 23 February 1913 with their daughters, Elizabeth (Bessie) Allan Brownlee (1905-?) and Ann (Annie) McCulloch Brownlee (1909-1977?), and settled in Merewether, New South Wales. In nearby Killingworth, lived Archibald's uncle, Robert Brownlee (1854-1922), his wife, Elizabeth (1854-1946) and their daughter, Elizabeth (Essie) Janet Brownlee (1886-1973). Robert Brownlee worked as a storekeeper at Minmi and Killingworth. Other relations included Archibald's cousin, James Stewart Brownlee (1891-1973); 'Aunt' Annie Calpham (nee Brownlee) (1889-1951), daughter of William Brownlee (1856-1938) and Janet (nee Pillans) (1865-1940), who worked as a nursemaid to Lieutenant Colonel James William Clark (d. 1958) of Newcastle; family friend, Bill Innes.

Ann (Annie) McCulloch Brownlee became a nurse at Wallsend Hospital in the 1930s. She married Athol Gallowey Gilmour (d. 1979) in 1939 and, in his obituary, she was referred to as 'Nan'. Elizabeth (Bessie) Allan Brownlee married William Brownlee (possibly William Frederick Brownlee (1888-1953), son of Robert and Elizabeth) described as Annie's "cousin", a week after her sister in 1939, and became a teacher.

The 'Mr & Mrs W. Johnston and family' refer to William Wallace Johnston (1864-1920) and his wife, Elizabeth McFarlane Smith (1871-1935) who lived in West Wallsend, New South Wales after 1913.
