  • General note

    Professor Emma Johnston is Professor & Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney. Her fields of research include aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, marine bioinvasions and climate change ecology. She has led major research projects for industry, government, the Australian Research Council and the Australian Antarctic Science Program and has contributed to the development of international and national research strategies, priorities and plans. Professor Johnston was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday honours for distinguished service to higher education as an academic, researcher and administrator and for service to scientific institutes. Professor Johnston was Co-Chief Author of the Australian State of Environment Report 2021, was appointed to the board of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in 2023 and now sits as the Technical Advisor on Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment.
