In this interview Ahmed Suhaib discusses Islam as his family practiced the faith, describing it as ‘a very important part of our life’. He also speaks about attending high school in Qatar, becoming aware of his same-sex attraction, migrating to the US to study, the impact hearing a Muslim student talking about acceptance of LGBTQ+ people had on him and how society slowly being exposed to queer culture through popular media such as the television show Wil and Grace and the significance of an out gay Muslim character on the UK television series Eastenders has aided his journey.
Ahmed also discusses his work with the social support group Sydney Queer Muslims and with HIV organisation Ankali, and the ways in which he has reconciled his sexuality and his faith, and the challenges of living in Australia as a queer Brown Muslim.
