Ruth Maddison was born on 18 November 1945 in Melbourne, Victoria. A self-taught photographer from 1976, she worked freelance and was commissioned for projects with various organisations and agencies, with an emphasis on portraiture and social documentary. In 1996, she moved to Eden, New South Wales, where the bulk of her work now focuses on the lives of people in the Eden and Pambula district. Her work has been regularly displayed in solo and group exhibitions since 1979 and she has secured over a dozen grants, awards and residencies.

"Now A River Went Out of Eden Work book 2000-2002" album of 284 photographic proofs for the series by Ruth Maddison capturing teenagers living in Eden, New South Wales, and their attitudes towards the future and desire to leave the small town to seek opportunities elsewhere. Several of the pages are dated, some photographs are annotated with names and ages, and the last page in the notebook records a numbered list of names and some locations.
