  Jack Hassen was born on 25 January 1924 in Cloncurry, Queensland. He was a Kalkadoon man and grew up as an orphan on the Aboriginal reserve on Great Palm Island, Queensland. He took up boxing in his adolescence as a member of Jimmy Sharman's travelling boxing troupe and had his first professional fight in December 1943 in Atherton. He fought regularly throughout the 1940s with his first fight in Sydney on 25 October 1948. On 19 September 1949, he was matched with Archie Kemp for the Australian Lightweight Champion title at the Sydney Stadium. Following Kemp's death after the fight from a cerebral haemorrhage, Hassen lost six of his seven subsequent fights until his retirement in 1951. After his boxing career, Hassen joined the Waterside Workers' Federation in November 1963 and campaigned for union rights and anti-conscription to the Vietnam War before retiring in July 1984. He died on 8 December 2002 in La Perouse, New South Wales.
