  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Safdar Ahmed is a Sydney-based artist and academic whose work explores issues of representation, belonging and human rights with a focus on Islamic culture. He studied at the National Art School and, in 2010, completed a PhD from the University of Sydney. He is a founding member of Refugee Art Project and regularly holds art workshops with asylum seekers and refugees in the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. His graphic novel, Still Alive, was published in 2021.

  • Scope and Content
    3 sketchbooks containing 140 drawings, 26 loose drawings and 23 prints and graphic panel reproductions illustrated by Safdar Ahmed for the graphic novel Still Alive, which documents the artist's experiences visiting the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. It examines Australia's refugee detention policies and procedures and explores the moral despondency these policies can evoke through parallels with the horror genre.
