  • Scope and Content
Matt Cosgrove is a successful children's book author and illustrator. In this interview he describes his childhood growing up in Richmond in the 1970s and 1980s, in a family environment that nurtured his love of reading and his early interest in and talent for drawing.

He talks about his school life and the teachers at primary and high school who supported his ambition to become a children's book author and illustrator, and about attending Western Sydney University where he gained a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication majoring in illustration. In his first week there he met Eva Amores, a student in the same course; they married in 2000, have two sons and are co-creators of the best-selling series Worst Week Ever, of which the first title ('Monday') was published in 2021.

Matt discusses his early jobs as an illustrator, a 10-year period when he worked for Pacific Magazines, and his decision to return to freelance work so he could more easily pursue his own children's book projects. One of these was Macca the Alpaca, published in 2018 and immediately successful. Matt talks about this and the books he's created since, and reflects on his profession and the publishing industry more generally.
