  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Joy Nason (1943- ) was born in Bristol, England and migrated to Australia with her family in 1953. Raised in the Exclusive Brethren faith, she fled the sect in the 1960s, resulting in her being cut off from her family. In the early 2000’s Joy actively petitioned the Federal Government to recognize the Exclusive Brethren as a cult and revoke their tax-exempt status. Angered by John Howard’s apparent refusal to denounce the sect, Nason joined the community activist group ‘GetUp!’ and letterbox dropped leaflets in the Prime Minister’s electorate of Bennelong in the run up to the 2007 Federal Election. During the 2013 Federal Election ‘GetUp!’ appointed Joy as Booth Coordinator for her local electorate polling station. Joy has since been involved with the ‘Voices of Mackellar’ community group and worked as a volunteer during the 2022 Federal Election campaign in support of Dr Sophie Scamps.

Dr Sophie Scamps MP (1971- ) is a former athlete and gold medallist that represented Australia at the 1990 World Junior Championships. She qualified for the 1992 Olympics as a middle-distance runner but was ultimately not selected for the Australian team. Sophie studied Medicine at the University of Sydney and earned Masters degrees from Oxford and the University of New South Wales. Dr Scamps worked as a doctor in the Emergency Department at Mona Vale Hospital and as a General Practitioner in Narrabeen. In 2020 Scamps became involved in politics, helping to found the non-partisan community group ‘Voices of Mackellar’. She stood as an Independent candidate for Mackellar during the 2022 Federal Election. There was a historic swing away from the major parties towards ‘Teal’ Independents during the election, with Dr Sophie Scamps winning the Federal seat of Mackellar.
