  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Kenneth Donald Buckley, AM (1922-2006) was born in Hackney, London. After serving with British Intelligence during the Second World War, he completed his studies in economics at the Queen Mary College, University of London, graduating with first class honours. He took a permanent position as Lecturer in Economic History at Sydney University in 1953, retiring as Associate Professor in 1987.

A Marxist and civil libertarian, Buckley agitated for social and political causes. He was a prominent figure in the foundation of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties in 1963, established together with socially aware academics, lawyers, clergy, and politicians concerned for the rights of individuals in the face of excesses by State and Commonwealth Government organisations such as New South Wales Police Special Branch and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

Ken Buckley was also a historian, publishing works on labour and business history, including histories commissioned by the Burns Philp company and the Evatt Foundation. In 2000 Buckley was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the community as an advocate for civil liberties, human rights and social justice issues in Australia.

  • Collection history
Ken Buckley had originally donated this collection to the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. During 2001-2002, Christine de Matos was working for the Society’s journal, ‘Labour History: A Journal of Labour and Social History’ as an editorial trainee when the Society decided it did not wish to keep the collection. As de Matos was writing a PhD at the time which featured H. V. Evatt, she ‘put her hand up’ and took possession of the collection, keeping it in her custody until donating it to the State Library in 2024. Reference: Library acquisition file
