    The Windeyer family are a significant New South Wales family, with members from five generations holding prominent positions within law and politics. Many of the women of the family were known for their work in education and women’s suffrage.

    Sir Victor Windeyer was decorated commander of the 20th Brigade during World War II, university lecturer, barrister, Privy Councillor and Justice of the High Court .

    From 1 July 1940, Lieutenant Colonel Windeyer was in command of the 2/48 Australian Infantry battalion, Australia's highest decorated unit of the Second World War. From 6 January 1942 until the end of the war, Windeyer commanded the 20th Australian Infantry Brigade, taking part in the first and second battles of El Alamein, before returning to New Guinea and assisting with the capture of Lae and Finschhafen.
