William John Hannah was born in 1883 in Maclean, New South Wales. Evidence of his interest in photography was cited in newspaper articles as early as 1910, and in 1928, he announced the opening of a portrait studio in Murwillumbah, the films and negatives for which were collected from Whittle's Pharmacy. He married twice, firstly to Mary Violet Nicholls (1887-1930) on 30 December 1908 and secondly to Agnes Jane McKinnon (1884-1957) in 1915, and had two daughters. He died on 9 June 1950 in Murwillumbah.
