  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Richard George Howard Joseland was born on 14 January 1860 in Claines, Worcestershire, England, first emigrating to New Zealand in 1886 and then to Australia in 1888. On 13 September 1888, he married Isabella Alice Taylor (1862-1891). Having worked as an assistant in several architectural firms in England, Joseland met Walter Vernon and, in 1890, was invited to take over his practice. On 6 April 1897, he married Blanche Augusta Hay (1870-1954) whose half-brother had inherited the Coolangatta Estate nrar Berry, New South Wales. From 1898, Joseland worked as an architect in Sydney and from 1900 he lived on Burns Road, Wahroonga in a house he self-built. He died on 20 July 1930 in Darlinghurst.

    Watercolour of the house on Coolangatta Estate in Coolangatta, New South Wales, the first settled area on the South Coast. Howard Joseland worked as an architect on the estates of Alexander Berry, who established Coolangatta in 1822.
