Alison Summers is an Australian theatre director, journalist, writer and editor. She was born in Perth and moved with her family to Canberra when she was ten years old. She graduated from the Australian National University with an honours degree in English Literature and, after moving to Toronto in 1975 with her then husband David Brooks, went on to complete a master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Toronto. Working as a freelance journalist, her interviews, book reviews and other articles appeared in the Canadian and Australian press. In Toronto, then in Australia and subsequently in New York she was deeply involved in the theatre, principally as a director, but also as a dramaturg (at the Nimrod Theatre, Sydney, where she also began the Nimrod Reading Series), artistic director (Toe Truck Theatre, Sydney), script assessor and playwright. In New York she wrote and directed the production ‘Punch Me in the Stomach’. In all, she directed over forty off-Broadway theatre productions.
Summers has also published the non-fiction works ‘The girls’ guide to predators’ (2010) and ‘The girls’ guide to the criminal mind’ (2012) and has edited the work of writers Kathy Lette, Ruby Wax, Kristin Williamson, Lynda LaPlante and her ex-husband Peter Carey.
