CMS was established in England in 1799 by a group of Anglican evangelicals who included John Newton and William Wilberforce. A CMS outpost was established in Sydney in 1825 with work amongst the Aboriginal people their primary focus. The first missionaries arrived from England to work in western New South Wales with CMS Associations established around Australia.

In 1916 the Australian CMS Associations came together to form the Church Missionary Association of Australia (later named Church Missionary Society of Australia). Missionaries from Australia were sent to many counties including China, India, Palestine and Iran and later focused on North Australia and Tanganyika (Tanzania).
