  • Scope and Content
In this interview Bruce Pollack talks about his Jewish upbringing in Melbourne, working at St Martin’s Theatre, his ‘hippy’ days studying architecture at university, working at the Melbourne Theatre Company, getting married and moving to Britain before returning to Australia in 1980 to run Sydney’s Nimrod Theatre. Pollack speaks about separating from his wife and coming out in 1983 before starting a highly successful public relations business from his Paddington home while raising his son.

From 1985 he became involved with many gay organisations appearing in Sydney and during the interview focuses on his experience with the Gay Business Association. He also discusses the establishment of Fair Day, the Gay Business Expo, Fruits in Suits, and the involvement of women in the eventual forming of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association. Pollack talks about founding the Auroa Group, his long association with the Drag Industry Variety Awards, founding of Gay Fathers in 1986, work for the Gay Games in Sydney in 2002 and of building the best board to run World Pride 2023.

Pollack describes the emotive work of the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service NSW in which he was long an active trainer and counsellor and his time with Mardi Gras publicising its first festival in 1984 and countering negative publicity. He also talks about the personal impact of AIDS and of his comprehensive involvement in national, state and federated AIDS organisations, leading to his Order of Australia in 2016.
