  • General note

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, marks the start of the Hindu New Year. It is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs annually. Parramatta is one of the centres for Diwali celebrations, particularly Harris Park, known as 'Little India'. Festivities, which continue into the night, include the lighting of candles and clay lamps (diyas), as well as entertainment for families.
