Michael Kelly was born in 1956 in Orange, New South Wales. He studied at East Sydney Technical College and graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1987. His works have been regularly exhibited in Australia and overseas since 1988 and he has been an artist in residence in Dunmoochin, Victoria in 2000-2003, in Bundanon, New South Wales in 2005 and Clayton Utz, Sydney in 2009 and 2012. In 2005, he was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in New York City.

Oil on Claessens #68 linen depicting the building on the corner of Harmer Street and Bourke Street, looking east towards Forbes Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney. Also visible in the lower right quarter are units 8 through 16 on Harmer Street, and terrace houses numbers 72 and 74 on Forbes Street.
