Michael Kelly was born in 1956 in Orange, New South Wales. He studied at East Sydney Technical College and graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1987. His works have been regularly exhibited in Australia and overseas since 1988 and he has been an artist in residence in Dunmoochin, Victoria in 2000-2003, in Bundanon, New South Wales in 2005 and Clayton Utz, Sydney in 2009 and 2012. In 2005, he was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in New York City.

Oil on Claessens #68 linen showing the vicinity of Kings Cross, Sydney. Depicted on the left side in blue, pink and purple is the building at 79-81 Bayswater Road, Rushcutters Bay, adjacent to Kings Cross Road. On the right side are orange and mint green terrace houses on Bayswater Road.
