  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Miriam Frances Moxham (nee Huntley) was born on 12 December 1885 in Ryde, Sydney and grew up in Huntley's Point, Sydney. She trained at the Royal Art Society School and the Julian Ashton Art School, and after marrying her second husband, Leslie John Moxham (1886-1975), on 28 November 1920, she lived in Roseville, Sydney. She exhibited her paintings through the Society of Artists during the 1930s and 1940s, and had two solo exhibitions in 1937 and 1951. In addition to painting, she also composed poetry, and a book of her poems and illustrations was published in 1936. She died on 6 March 1971 in Sydney. She is also known as Miriam Huntley and Miriam Phillips, after her first husband, John Sydney Phillips (1888-1954).

    Previously submitted for The Sulman Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, 1945, catalogue item 8, and later exhibited there in January and February 1946. Previously listed for sale at the artist's solo show, Grosvenor Gallery, 22-30 August 1951. Subsequently sold through Christies, Lot 105, Australian and International Art, 17 August 1999, Sydney. Subsequently listed for sale through Gibson's Auctions, Lot 122, Australian, Maritime & Exploration: Part 1.
  • Scope and Content
    Oil on masonite painting depicting a scene of horse racing at an unspecified racecourse in 1945. Depicted in the foreground are a betting ring and bookie, a group of punters and two mounted jockeys. In the mid-ground is a race in progress, and in the background are the spectator stands and crowds of racegoers lining the railings.

  • Attributions / conjectures

    Attribution that this work depicts Randwick Racecourse was made by Jacqui Strecker in 'Heritage : the national women's art book, 500 works by 500 Australian women artists from colonial times to 1955', edited by Joan Kerr, published by G + B Arts International Ltd. 1995, plate 257, page 155. However, buildings in the painting do not accurately reflect the architecture at Randwick, which was also closed between March 1942 and 1952 due to WWII and then extensive renovations.
