Sir Samuel Hordern was born on 24 September 1876 in Darling Point, Sydney. His father, Samuel Hordern, was the grandson of Anthony Hordern I who founded the Anthony Hordern & Sons department store in Sydney in 1823, and Samuel the son worked in the family business from 1895. On 4 March 1900, he married Charlotte Isabel Annie See (1877-1952) with whom he had three children: Doreen Edith (1901-1997), Charlotte Audrey (1904-1991) and Samuel ('Sam') (1909-1960). He died on 3 June 1956 in Sydney.

Frederick Hugh Hordern (known as Hugh Hordern) was born on 23 September 1889 in Ashfield, Sydney, fourth son of Edward Carr Hordern (1853-1940) and Frances Lillie (1866-1960). Instead of joining the family business, he studied at Durham University from 1912-1914 and became a clergyman. On 12 November 1914, he married Iris Mary White (1891-1972) with whom he had five children: Mary Lillie (1915-2000), Iris Noel (1916-2019), Hugh David Carr (1920-2008), Marsden Carr (1922-2020) and John Norman Carr (1924-2013). On 31 January 1940, Iris (known as Noel) married Arthur Hugh Darling (b. 1910). On 4 July 1953, Marsden married Lesley Frances Mary Spooner (1928-2011). Hugh Hordern died on 5 February 1975 in Warrawee, New South Wales. Noel died on 16 January 2019 in Wahroonga, New South Wales. Marsden died in 2020.

Hordern; Distance Flown 398 miles; 1079 Yards; Velocity 1191 Yards per Minute. 452 Pigeons Competed; October 21st 1905; P. Conway, J. Wright; Hon. Secs."

1 bronze medal in leather and gilt bordered fitted case, awarded to "S. Hordern's bird, 96 miles, 1039 yards per min., 1891" by the N.S.W. Poultry, Pigeon, Canary and Dog Society. Inside of case lid bears coat of arms "By Special Appointment. Elkington & Co. Ld. London & Sydney’.
