  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Phyllis Sykes Shillito (1895-1980) was a trained artist and art teacher. She moved to Brisbane in 1923 with her parents before taking up a teaching position at Sydney Technical College (later East Sydney Technical College). She was an Archibald and Wynne finalist several times, and collaborated on book illustration with Dorothy Wall, author of Blinky Bill. Shillito also produced numerous bookplates, among them one for Captain Francis de Groot in which she depicted the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Shillito exhibited her work in several exhibition and in April 1930 she showed 'a small but very creditable collection of water colours', with a few etchings and drawings, at the Beaux Arts gallery, Melbourne. One of the items listed was titled ‘Bondi’.
