  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Molnar was born in Nagyvárad (then part of Hungary, now Romania) on 25 April 1910 and arrived in Australia in 1939 as a sponsored migrant to work as a government architect in Canberra. Later, he worked in Sydney as a designer and illustrator at the Ministry of Munitions. His works as a cartoonist appeared in the Daily Telegraph from 1944, and from 1954, he was the leader-page cartoonist for the Sydney Morning Herald. He lectured in architecture at Sydney University until 1967 and at the University of New South Wales until 1975, and, as an artist of drawings and watercolours, his works were exhibited through the 1970s to 1990s. He was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1971 and an AO (Order of Australia, Officer of the Order) in 1988. He died on 16 November 1998.

  • Scope and Content
    A watercolour showing an urban scene at the Cosmopolitan Café in Double Bay, Sydney. Café patrons move around the space, sit at tables with drinks and cakes, and smoke cigars. The fashion depicted suggests a time period of about the 1970s. The title is incorporated into the work as banners across the top which read "Double Bay ; Pulsates ; With Cosmopolitan ; Sophistication".
