  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Jean-Gabriel Prêtre was born on 20 December 1768 in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked as a natural history illustrator at Château de Malmaison, home of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, and as a painter at the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History) in Paris, France. He died on 29 April 1849.

    Published as plate 93 in the sixteenth livraison (part) of "Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux : pour servir de suite et de complément aux planches enluminées de Buffon, édition in-folio et in-4⁰ de l'Imprimerie royale, 1770" by C.J. Temminck and Baron Meiffren Laugier de Chartrouse, illustrated by MM. Huet and Pretre, between 1820 and 1839. Publisher Legras Imbert and Co., Strasbourg.

  • Signatures / Inscriptions

    Ink annotation of "93" (referring to the plate number) in the lower left. Pencil annotation along top edge: "By either Pretre or Huet artist's own copy original watercolour [illegible] for Temminck ; #B.2". Huet refers to Nicolas Huet the Younger, a French natural history illustrator active between 1788 and 1827.
