  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    David Moore was born on 6 April 1927 in Vaucluse, Sydney and was interested in photography from childhood, encouraged by his father. After serving in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II, Moore took up studies in photography at the Russell Roberts studio in Sydney in 1947 and later worked with Max Dupain. In 1951, he moved to London and photographed on commission for various publications in Europe and the USA including the New York Times, Time, The Observer and Life. In 1958, he returned to Australia and continued his career in photojournalism, as well as exhibiting his work through the 1960s. in 1973, he helped found the Australian Centre for Photography with Wesley Stacey and several other photographers. David died on 23 January 2003 in Longueville, Sydney.

    Prints were sourced by the vendor from the private collection of Lisa Moore, daughter of David Moore.
  • Scope and Content
    20 silver gelatin photographic prints of the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, printed by David Moore in 1976 from the original glass plate negatives made by Henri Mallard between 1924 and 1931. Images include workers making excavations; sitting and standing on the bridge and scaffolding; the joining of the arch pieces, and crowds walking across the newly opened bridge. Print "HM 5" captures Henri Mallard seated on bridge scaffolding holding his camera, taken by an unknown photographer.
