  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir William Elliot Johnson was born on 10 April 1862 in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. He settled in Sydney in 1883 and became a member of the Labor Electoral League of New South Wales, serving as president of the Newtown branch. He served in the House of Representatives between 1903 and 1928, including two non-consecutive terms as Speaker of the House (1913–1914 and 1917–1923). He was also an amateur topographical artist and lithographer, as well as having several political cartoons published in the Democrat (Sydney) in 1884. He died in Geelong, Victoria, on 8 December 1932.

    The work has been previously exhibited three times: -Society of Artists' Rooms, catalogue item number 12, 'Exhibition of Pictures of Old Sydney,' Sydney, 1902. Work was titled 'View in Cumberland-street and old Stone-house built by Governor Macquarie'.   • Scope and Content
    Oil on card painting depicting Cumberland Street, Sydney, looking south towards the city. Visible in the foreground are the single storey houses of numbers 95 and 97 Cumberland Street, which had been constructed during the previous decade, and the domesticity of working class citizens with laundry hanging out to dry and several smoking chimneys.
