  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Charles Henry Bertie (1875-1952) was born in Lionsville, Clarence River, NSW. In 1899 he joined the Sydney Municipal Council working under the city surveyor and eventually became chief clerk. From 1904 onwards he began writing articles on literature for Sydney newspapers and in 1909 became first librarian of the new Sydney Municipal Library. In 1909 he also became a member of the Royal Australian Historical Society. He subsequently had a long association with the Society and held various position such as member of council, president, honorary secretary and honorary research secretary. During his lifetime he became a well-known speaker, writer and authority on early Sydney.
