  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Magician and ventriloquist, Edwin A. Dearn was born in England in 1892. After living in Shanghai for a number of years he settled in Sydney, where he died in 1980. Dearn, who was a friend of magicians including Harry Houdini and Max Malini, assembled a large collection of books, memorabilia and ephemera relating to magic.

  • Collection history
    The vendor advised that he purchased the scrapbooks at a Sydney auction some years ago, possibly from a Lawsons auction of Dearn material in 2013.
  • Scope and Content
    2 scrapbooks compiled between the 1920s and 1950s by Edward A. Dearn, magician. Includes clippings, ephemera, and correspondence, primarily relating to magic. One of the scrapbooks is commercially produced and titled ‘Will Goldston’s Magical Scraps.’ The bookplate of Edwin Dearn is pasted inside the front cover.
