  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Edward William Knox was born on 1 April 1847 in Sydney, one of four sons of Sir Edward Knox (1819-1901) who founded the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in 1855. Edward William joined the company in 1864, becoming general manager in 1880 and managing director in 1920. He and family travelled extensively to Europe and the Pacific, observing milling methods which he later employed at C.S.R.C. On 30 January 1878, he married Edith Willis (1855-1942) and, from 1883, he lived in Rona, a house he had built in Bellevue Hill. He was a sailing enthusiast and a collector of paintings and objets d'art. In February 1933, he resigned from C.S.R.C. and died on four months later on 26 June.
