Arthur Robert Grubbe (1851-1914) was the son of John Eustace Grubbe (1816-1899), mayor of Southwold, Suffolk, England and Julia Catherine Grubbe (nee Hall) (1820-1901). In 1875, 23-year-old Arthur visited Australia for health-related reasons. He returned home to England in November 1876, arriving in Plymouth in January 1877.

Vendor purchased the material in England in 2016. Before this the material had been listed as part of an extensive archive of Grubbe family papers sold by Bonhams, Oxford, 24 March 2015, lot 323.

Diary (with key) of Arthur Robert Grubbe, 1875, documenting his voyage to Australia and subsequent stay chiefly in Sydney at the Australian Club and rural New South Wales. The final section of his diary, written in January 1877 on his return to England, documents his journey through rural New South Wales including a coach ride from Murrurundi to Bendemeer, a concert at the Glover's Hotel in Bendemeer, and his stay at a large sheep farm at Bundarra owned by Sydney Hudson Darby.

Loose documents including 14 letters, 1 invoice and 1 receipt. The correspondence includes letters of introduction and travel advice from friends in England.
