The Anzac Parade War Memorial obelisk is one of the earliest monuments dedicated to the role of the Anzacs in the First World War. Designed by City Architect R.H. Brodrick, the monument was erected as part of the reconfiguration of Anzac Parade, formerly Randwick Road, on 15 March 1917, less than one year after the inauguration of Anzac Day. It became the focal point for Sydney’s Anzac Day commemorations until the Cenotaph was built in Martin Place in 1927. Saving Moore Park Inc. has held a dawn service there each Anzac Day from 2017, the centenary of its inauguration.

In 2020 there was no dawn service due to COVID-19 restrictions. The trail of candles, by an unknown person, was deliberately placed to link the Lone Pine tree with the Anzac obelisk memorial.
