Sydney Long was born on 20 August 1871 in Goulburn, New South Wales, and moved to Sydney in 1888. From around 1890, he studied at the Art Society of New South Wales's school and, within five years, had become a full-time painter. He became president of the Society of Artists in 1898, and, in 1910, he moved to London where he studied at an art school in Kensington. In 1921, he returned to Sydney where he had several successful exhibitions, and was a founding member of the Australian Painter-Etchers' Society. He returned to London in 1952 and died there on 23 January 1955.

Previously auctioned at Christie's as Lot 51, 'Queen's Square, St James Church, Sydney', The Fred and Elinor Wrobel Collection, 4 October 1977.

Oil on canvas painting depicting St James Church and King Street from Queens Square, Sydney, following a rainstorm. Visible behind the church is St James Theatre, and Restaurant Rainaud on the right side, as well as automobiles and figures suggesting an approximate date of 1928.
