  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Douglas Robert Dundas was born on 25 January 1900 in Inverell, New South Wales. Showing an interest and talent in art from an early age, he trained at the Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton, and in 1927, he won the Society of Artists’ Travelling Scholarship, which enabled him to study at the London Polytechnic and in Paris with André Lhote. He returned to Australia in 1929 and held his first solo exhibition at the Macquarie Gallery, Sydney. From 1931 he taught at the East Sydney Technical College (later the National Art School); he was head of painting until 1960 and head of the school until 1965. In 1941, he married fellow artist Dorothy Thornhill (1910-1987) after filing for divorce from his first wife, Sheila McEacharn (1902-1981) the previous year. He died on 30 June 1981 at St Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst.
