  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Architect Hedley Norman Carr was born in Orange, NSW in 1904. After completing his architectural studies at Sydney Technical College in 1927, he served his architectural articles with Arthur Anderson at his office at 7 Bridge Street, Sydney, having entered his practice as a pupil in 1923. After registering as an architect in 1929, Carr set off on an overseas working holiday, completing work with Swartz and Ryland, Monterey, California, USA; Kenneth M. Murchison, Washington DC; Robert Atkinson & A.F. Anderson, London, UK; W.H. Byrne & Son, Dublin and the Housing Architects Department, Dublin, Ireland.
Returning to Sydney in 1936, Carr set up his private practice as a sole practitioner at 26 O’Connell Street, Sydney. From 1942-44 Carr was a temporary architect for the Allied Works Council, providing architectural services to the war effort, whilst conducting limited private practice concurrently.
Hedley Carr continued in solo private practice until he was joined in partnership by Clarence (Clarry) Albert Allen in 1951, and then John McEachran Michell Watts in 1958. Hedley Carr passed away in 1966, aged 62; then firm continued on without him until Allen’s death in 1983 and Watts’ retirement in the 1990s.
