  • General note

The story of the muddle-headed wombat featured in radio serials and later in children's books by Australian author Ruth Park. Park was commissioned to write a dramatised series for the Australian Broadcasting Commission's Children's Programs in 1942. The first episode of 'The Wide-Awake Bunyip' was aired in January 1943, with Albert Collins in the title role. In 1951, Park changed the title to 'The Muddle-Headed Wombat'. Leonard Teale played the part of the wombat. When Teale left, John Ewart took the role for the next 18 years. The popularity of the series led Ruth Park to write her series of Muddle-Headed Wombat books in the 1960s. The radio series ended when the Children's Hour was discontinued in 1972.
