Doreen Warburton was born in London in 1930. She started her training and professional career with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, toured the UK extensively plus two European tours, three Edinburgh festivals and a season in the West End under Michael Redgrave and Sam Wannamaker. In 1949, Doreen came to visit her parents and siblings in Australia, and stayed. In 1963, Doreen with five other actors, including Ben Gabriel (whom she later married), became a founding member of the Q Theatre. The theatre started at the AMP Theatrette at Circular Quay, Sydney; and it was re-established as "Q2" at Penrith in 1977, where Doreen was full time Artistic Director and General Manager. In 1979, Doreen received an OBE for her work in the theatre. During her career Doreen worked for all the major theatre companies in Sydney, appeared in many TV shows and iconic Australian films including They're A Weird Mob, Nickel Queen, Wendy Cracked a Walnut and Ned Kelly. She taught at NIDA, was a member of the Theatre Board of the Australia Council, a founding member of the Actors Forum, and a lifelong member of Actors Equity. She died aged 87 in West Gosford.
