Edward Harbas (1948) is an amateur photographer and motorcyclist who was an active member of the counterculture during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In November 1969, he visited Sydney and photographed the astronauts of Apollo 11 during their world tour following their historic trip to the moon. Harbas was born in Germany, migrated to Australia with his family in 1950 and lived at the Greta Migrant Centre in the Hunter Valley. They later moved to Kurri Kurri, New South Wales in 1959 and to Rockhampton, Queensland in 1976.

139 35mm black and white photographic negatives created by Edward Harbas, amateur photographer and motorcyclist predominantly based in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales. The collection includes photographs of motorcycle counterculture in the rural NSW town of Kurri Kurri including street racing and members of The Hell’s Angels biker club, and his camping trip with other cycling enthusiasts to Bathurst Grand Prix races in Mount Panorama in 1968. It also contains photographs which document the arrival of the Apollo 11 astronauts in Sydney on their 1969 world tour and the ‘May Day’ march in Newcastle in 1972.
