  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Yang was born in 1943 in Dimbulah, Queensland and found an interest in photography after studying architecture at the University of Queensland. In the late 1960s, he relocated to Sydney and worked as a playwright for the Performance Syndicate, later photographing social events. Yang considered himself more of an artist than a commercial photographer and held his first exhibition in 1977. He became involved with the gay subculture around Oxford Street, Sydney and began to explore his previously unacknowledged Chinese Australian identity. His work explores culture, sexuality and identity and has been exhibited across Australia, Japan and the United States.
