    Alfred Ernest Stephen (1879-1961) was an agricultural and industrial chemist and a grandson of Sir Alfred Stephen (1802-1894), Chief Justice of New South Wales.

  • Collection history
    The Mining, Exploration and Geoscience Library received the notebooks following the decommissioning of the Mineral Resources Library at the former Department of Mines, where Alfred Stephen had donated the items on his retirement.
  • Scope and Content
    This collection consists of two bound notebooks:
    1. 'Notes etc. on Methods, &c. practised at The Lachlan Gold Fields Ltd., Forbes, N. S. W.', Alfred E. Stephen
    2. 'Volume II Minerals', E. E. Tyler, Klondyke Mine Wyalong, (Wheeler’s Hotel)

    The notebooks contain manuscript notes and clippings intended for researching gold mines management and methodologies. Subjects include analysis of water supply from mines; bullion assay; wages and salaries for occupations; costs sheets; battery returns; notes on prospecting with a diamond drill; analysis and assay of ores; method of starting a blast furnace; returns of gold mines. Alfred Stephen's notebook also includes formal examination questions and technical drawings of equipment.
