In 1979, director Rex Cramphorn and a select group of Australian actors (including Ruth Cracknell, Arthur Dignam, John Gaden, Ron Haddrick, Jennifer Hagan, Drew Forsythe, John Howard, Robert Menzies, Tony Mack and Kerry Walker) were given an Australia Council 'Limited Life' Grant to develop an innovative approach to producing Shakespearean plays. They established A Shakespeare Company and spent six months preparing two plays, Two Gentlemen of Verona and Measure for Measure, which were performed at the Seymour Centre in 1980.
