  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The first company to purchase the area on Prospect Hill subsequently used for quarrying was the New South Wales Blue Metal Company in 1919. Blue Metal Industries Limited was founded in 1952, and on 14 December 1978, they changed their name to BMI Limited, On 13 January 1983, they were taken over by Boral Limited, and were delisted as a company on 21 March 1984.

    Photographs collected during Michael Formosa's 51-year career at BMI and Boral Materials Technical Services laboratory.
  • Scope and Content
    Photographic prints of various quarries at Prospect Hill (Prospect Quarry, Widemere Quarry, Emu Quarry) and Dunmore Quarry, Illawarra. Images include aerial views, site works and buildings, crushing and drilling machinery, and candid and portrait images of BMI Limited employees including chairman Sir John Austin, Tony Doyle, Jim McCormack, Charlie Formosa, John Axiax, Graham Thompson, Charlie Bussutil, Joe Debrincat, Charlie Vella, Paul Farugia, Ken Walker and Gardner.

    1 album of photographs, folder of 12 photographic prints and 2 sketches relating to work on the Mascot-Botany South Wall. 9 photographic prints of Dunmore Quarry. 4 photographic prints of Emu Quarry.

    BOX 3
    225 photographic prints of Prospect Quarry. 7 photographs, a letter from Maritime Services Board N.S.W. to the manager of Quarries Pty Ltd. dated 25 February 1949 relating to the loss of the S.S. Bombo, which sank on 22 February 1949, and programme from the memorial service for her captain and eleven crew held on 6 March 1949.
