  • Scope and Content
In this interview operatic baritone and former Opera Australia artistic director, Lyndon Terracini, speaks in depth about his life and career from growing up in Sydney’s Dee Why to his plans for life after Opera Australia.
Lyndon recalls his family’s connection to the Salvation Army including his time in the band where he was introduced to percussion and social justice. He then discusses his operatic career including his professional debut in 1976 as Sid in the Australian Opera's production of Albert Herring at the Sydney Opera House, living in Italy with his young family studying new techniques and his many singing roles across Europe, notably with composer Hans Werner Henze.
Lyndon then talks about his return to Australia, settling in Lismore in 1989, playing significant roles (Sweeney Todd, Giovanni, Casonova, Rochester, Gaugin, Frankenstein and Rosa) and the founding of the Northern Rivers Performing Arts in Lismore.
Other topics include running the Queensland Music Festival and Brisbane Festival, being appointed Artistic Director and CEO of Opera Australia in 2009, establishing the annual outdoor Handa Operas on Sydney Harbour, collaborating with international companies and presenting some key works by Australian composers including Elena Kats-Chernin.
Lyndon also speaks about his stance on the ‘elitist academic preference’ for operas audiences ‘didn’t want to hear’, the impact of COVID on Opera Australia and comments on his last days at the Company.
