  • Scope and Content
    In this interview Professor Bill Gibson speaks about his life and career as a surgeon and professor specialising in Otolaryngology (the study of diseases of the ears, nose, and throat). He discusses implementing a program in NSW based on the pioneering work by Dr Graeme Clark and his team in Melbourne developing the ‘bionic ear’, and recalls early opposition from the medical, education, and Deaf communities in relation to operating on children to implant cochlear devices.
    Professor Gibson also talks about the landmark operation on
    five-year-old Holly McDonell, one of the first deaf children in the world to receive Cochlear implants and reflects on performing over 2000 Cochlear implant surgeries, his research, retirement, and the centres he has established in Australia to treat Meniere’s disease.
