  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Angelo Loukakis (1951- ) is an Australian author, born in Sydney to Greek parents. He attended Fort Street High School, studied English literature at the University of New South Wales, acquired a Diploma of Education from Sydney Teachers College and a Doctorate in Creative Arts from the University of Technology Sydney. He has worked as a writer of fiction, teacher, scriptwriter, editor and publisher.

Loukakis is significant as a first-generation Greek-Australian writer who, during the 1970s, publicly challenged the notion of ‘Australianess’ in the national literature. He rejected a ‘phony branch of ethnic writing’ and insisted that immigrant voices, including his own, belonged in the mainstream.

In addition to his creative work, Loukakis has been a member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council (1985–87), founding Chair of the NSW Writers' Centre (1991), and was Executive Director of the Australian Society of Authors (2010–16). His collection of short stories 'For the Patriarch' won the NSW Premier’s Literary Award and was featured on the HSC syllabus from 1986 to 2001.
