  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Climate statistics for Sydney (Observatory Hill) are publicly available through the Bureau of Meteorology’s website, but only date back to 1858 when regular record keeping began at Sydney Observatory.
A 2014 paper in Geoscience Data Journal (A historical climate dataset for southeastern Australia, 1788–1859) noted the scarcity of early historic climate data for the southern hemisphere compared to northern latitudes. As part of their research, the paper’s authors ‘rescued’ instrumental observations from 39 archival sources to assemble continuous information on southeast Australian climate between 1826 and 1859.
