  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Tony Rafty OAM (1915-2015) Caricaturist, cartoonist, illustrator, journalist and cartoon historian. Born 1915 in Paddington and educated at Rose Bay Public School and then Central Technical College at Broadway in metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing. A Fairfax cartoonist, war correspondent and author of Australia's first comic strip. Rafty‘s first cartooning job was with 'The Referee' in 1939. Rafty specialized in caricatures of media types, entertainers, politicians, golfers, boxers, and cricketers, and was without peer in terms of the number of drawings and caricatures autographed in his lifetime.
    James Nangle (1868-1941), was an architect, renowned educator and accomplished amateur astronomer. He served as Superintendent of Technical Education in NSW from 1913-1933. He was heavily involved in restructuring architectural education in New South Wales and also published in numerous journals.
    Rayner Hoff (1894-1937), was a sculptor and teacher. He taught drawing, modelling and sculpture at the East Sydney Technical College from March 1923. By 1934, he was in charge of the entire art department. He created various medals and won awards for his work. He produced a number of large-scale sculptures for War Memorials across Australia and designed the “Lion” for Holden.
    Donald Day (1888-1963), was a broadcaster and funny man who worked for many radio stations along the east coast of Australia. His real name was Alwyn Kurts Snr, but his stage name was Donald Day. He wrote 'Donald Day’s year book for 1938 : a cure for the blues'.

  • Scope and Content
    Autograph book belonging to Winifred Barnie, 1932-1934, containing two caricatures by Tony Rafty, both dated 1934. One of the caricatures is titled 'James Nangle, Supt. of Technical Education' and the other has two people in it – 'R. Hoff' & 'Donald Day 2ky' and is titled 'OH – it’s putting its fist up'.
    Winifred Barnie compiled the autograph book when she was approximately 15 years of age. Winifred attended the Central Technical College at Broadway, Sydney, and may have met Tony Rafty there.
