Barbara Davidson was a Sydney based artist, a printmaker (etching and lithography) and creator of hand-bound artists books. Davidson started creating artists books in the early 1990s, motivated by a desire to be able to arrange selections of her prints in a more permanent way (Crothers, p.69). Rather than out-sourcing the assembly of each book, she learnt book-binding in order to mange the entire process herself. This sketchbook forms basis of her artist book The Outback, produced in 1999 in a limited edition of 3 copies.

The sketchbook features drawings by Davidson recording a trip from Sydney through parts and New South Wales and South Australia to the Northern Territory. Includes scenes in Nyngan, Menindee, Broken Hill, Flinders Rages, Lake Eyre, Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kulgera, Darling River, Wilcannia.
