The Centennial Memorial Fountain, in Centenary Square, Parramatta, was commissioned by Parramatta Borough Council in 1887 to commemorate the centenary of the colony of NSW in 1888. A competition was held by the Council to select the best design and it was won by architect Horace Herbert Hollamby of Macquarie Street South, Sydney. The tender for the construction of the drinking fountain was won by Stenhouse and Mack for £580. The design featured a clock as well as a drinking fountain but unfortunately the clock itself was not supplied within the original tender price and funds were not available for its purchase and installation. Funds for the clock’s purchase were raised through a community subscription fund run by the Argus newspaper and the clock was installed in 1909.
