  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Scarvell (1834-1877) and Sydney Scarvell (1832-1875) were sons of John Larking Scarvell (1791-1861), a retired captain of the East India Company and landowner in Windsor, and Sarah Scarvell (Redmond) (1809-1873) the daughter of Irish emancipists.

In 1855, John Scarvell commissioned artist Richard Noble to paint individual portraits of his family at their residence at Clare House, in Oakville, near Windsor. Over the course of the year, Noble painted portraits of John and Sarah Scarvell, and their six eldest children - John Redmond Barnes (1830-1855); Sydney (1832-1875); George (1834-1877); Edward Augustus (1835-1883); Sarah Winefred Isabella Mary (1837-1929); and Elizabeth Mary (1840-1907).

The State Library of New South Wales holds seven of this suite of eight portraits - John Larking Scarvell (Mitchell Library call no. ML 1250) ; Sarah Scarvell (1809-1873) (Mitchell Library call no. ML 1251) ; John Redmond Barnes Scarvell (Mitchell Library call no. ML 1194) ; Sydney Scarvell (Mitchell Library call no.
