  • Scope and Content
Norrie discusses moving to Sydney, finding queer communities, the issues of economic security and safety that impact on trans people, the commercial and social scene in Sydney and sites such as the Taxi Club in Darlinghurst, sex work on William Street and housing affordability. They recall their first contact with the trans and gender diverse welfare service Teresia's House (later called The Gender Centre), the ‘tranny wars’ and differences of opinion with regard to surgical intervention, the medicalisation of transgender people and what some viewed as ‘surgical salvation’, finding work at the needle and syringe exchange outreach program operated by the Langton Centre and attending their first Mardi Gras.

Norrie discusses in detail their challenge in the High Court of Australia to claim their right to be ‘sex non-specific’ registered. They reflect on changing attitudes in Australian society towards gender diversity, their biggest challenges in life and where they have found their greatest sources of support.
